
Internationally recognized as a leading arts venue, the Walker Art Center presents contemporary visual arts and design exhibitions; dance, theater, and music performances; and film screenings. The museum's permanent collection includes over 13,000 modern and contemporary art pieces including books, costumes, drawings, media works, paintings, photography, prints, and sculpture. The Walker Art Center began 1879 as a personal art gallery and became the Walker Art Center in January 1940. The Walker's current building designed by Edward Larrabee Barnes was opened in 1971 and expanded in 1984. Minneapolis Parks and Recreation partnered with the Walker Art Center to establish the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden on the Walker's campus in 1988. TEMPORARY GALLERY HOURS Thursdays and Fridays, 11 am–12 noon, are dedicated hours for at-risk visitors. Thursday 11 am–9 pm Friday–Saturday 11 am–6 pm Sunday 11 am–5 pm Monday–Wednesday Closed Minneapolis Sculpture Garden Daily, 6 am–12 midnight Closed these major holidays: New Year’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day.
