In Mohammad Hossein Maher's Studio

Author : Darz

Reading Time : 4 Minutes

"Order in Disorder" may properly describe the attractive and dynamic space of Mohammad Hossein Maher's studio. This is a workshop where nothing seems to be in the right place, yet actually, everything is in the right place. Each object is occupying a specific space and gives an identity to the whole studio. One will disrupt the overall balance of the space if they try to order the apparent chaos, replace some objects, and organize canvases, books, and sculptures. This is Maher's "territory" and everything is ordered in the best way possible.

Mohammad Hossein Maher's Studio | Sanaei Street | Tehran | March 2022

Maher has been working in his studio in the Sanaei neighborhood for the last six years. Every day, he goes to the studio in the morning and spends the whole day working and reading. Although his studio's location has changed over the years, he believes the spiritual and conceptual atmosphere of the studio has remained the same for him, and the changes have only been physical. In the studio, one can go over Maher's tools, books, daily notes, personal photographs, posters, and invitation cards for old and new shows. His various artworks are visible all over the place; some are painted on a canvas, some on white cardboard, or even on a drafting film; some are installed on the wall and some are waiting on an easel to be completed.

A mass of canvases lies in one corner of the studio; a table crowded with painting tools, brushes, and oil paints is in the center; a painting is being completed on an easel. In another part of the studio, there is a table facing the yard; bright sunlight shines on this part and creates a calm mood. There are tools for smaller drawings and paintings; pencils, markers, and pens, with a tea flask, an ashtray, and a cellphone next to them. When he decides to take a break, he sits at this table, lights a cigarette, and drinks a cup of tea while thinking. Next to the table, there is a sofa on which he lies down to take a rest. Some portraits, in which he illustrated the figures' backs, are installed on the wall above the sofa; beautiful and attractive.
