The Personal is Political

Statement:

The exhibitions Nicky Nodjoumi: The Personal is Political and Nahid Hagigat: Etched in Time tell the story of a family of artists shaped by revolution.

In the face of challenges both personal and geopolitical, the exhibitions showcase the artists’ commitment to creative expression over many decades. From Nodjoumi’s surreal paintings that critique political power, to Hagigat’s evocative etchings about women’s struggle for freedom, we invite you to investigate their distinctive bodies of work. ///

The exhibitions are inspired by the HBO documentary A Revolution on Canvas. Co-directed by their daughter Sara Nodjoumi, the film examines the international controversy of 120 missing artworks in Iran, which led the family to flee the country—and irreversibly changed the family’s life forever.

Their story is that of many immigrant families, where political turmoil becomes deeply personal: a husband caught up in revolution, a wife creating a new home in a new country, and a daughter looking for answers decades later.
