Statement:

On February 8, Ithaque presents Dazzled, a solo exhibition of photographs by Tehran-based artist Golara Jahanian (b. Iran 1986) curated by Dorsa Jalali. The exhibition showcases works created over the past year in Iran, marking a shift in the artist's approach to her subjects. With a background in urban photography, this current series delves into the dynamic between indoor and outdoor spaces, exploring the essence of segregation and isolation.///

Initially, the series aimed to address the disintegration of societal groups. It reflected on the closure of public spaces in recent years, restricting gatherings for exchanging ideas. However, with time, the profound sense of isolation and impassable barriers became more apparent, necessitating a shift in the approach. As the series unfolded, the window came to light as the obstacle and the divider between spaces.

The window is a partition line, a collision point where life unravels within and beyond spaces. It is an encounter between the centre and the horizon, a border distinguishing private and public realms. In the starting point, the observer gazes outward, attempting to find a connection point.

Moving forward, the physical obstacles become more evident, and the camera flash, which is meant to make the scenery more visible, reflects from the window and causes dazzlement. Here, the frame is not meant for seeing, but rather for not seeing: it is the dazzled frame of darkness in the middle of the infinite brilliance of light. To be disconnected from the outside and to fold inwards.

The exhibition is on display until March 9, 2024.
