Fade Remnants

The starting point of this collection was in 2017, at the time of the Zayandeh-rood drought in Isfahan. This led the artist to a chain of excursions to central parts of Iran, to research the causes of drought and water scarcity in Iranian cities. The environmental catastrophes which have led to the drying up of almost all local lagoons and reservoirs, following the improper construction of dozens of dams on each river have also changed the habitat, migration and caused the death of thousands of fish, birds and plants. The main focus of the collection on display is the impact of the water crisis on the lives of inhabitants in this area. In continuation of her previous projects, Leila Mokhtari relies on transcendental spaces, referring to mythological stories to create birds that represent the inevitable conditions of long years of life in times of drought.
