Sohrab Mahdavi Dastan's Basement presents the latest show of the three-person collective, Block. "R.E.M." will open Friday January 14. 2022 and will be on view until Friday January 28. This is the collective's 4th exhibition. Block's first exhibition with Dastan, "Synaptic Cleft", was on view August 3-8, 2018 in the Electric Room. Works of this collection will be displayed in two parts - "Fall from Heights" and "Escape" - by two of the members, Hoseyn Hoseyni and Iman Izadinia. The exhibit will display these works alternately and in two phases. "R.E.M." is a phase in sleep in which dreams and nightmares appear. Narratives taking shape in R.E.M. sleep are subject to forgetfulness because they are not codified. Using the R.E.M. notion as metaphor, Block attempts at a "reinterpretation of images from inside a collective memory' and a reassessment of what is called "history". "The dreams of a people," Block's statement explains, "is made of a multiplicity of reconstructed narratives, shaped by a recurring forgetfulness and a priori editing." Works of this exhibition include painting, video, installation, videos collage, video performance, and video and sound installation./// Hoseyn Hoseyni (b. 1982, Isfahan) has an MA in Research in Art from Art & Architecture University, Tehran, Iran. He is one of the founders of the "Block", as the group likes to put it, in 2017. Every activity of Block since then has had an artistic as well as a curatorial side. Iman Izadinia (b. 1988, Isfahan) has an MA in Painting from University of Tehran. They have showed their works in numerous group and solo exhibitions.
