The museum was established by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation in 1939 as the Museum of Non-Objective Painting, under the guidance of its first director, the artist Hilla von Rebay. She was an abstract artist in the early 20th century and co-founder and first director of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. She was also influential in selecting Frank Lloyd Wright to design the current Guggenheim museum, which is now known as a modernist icon in New York City. In gallery space newly devoted to the permanent collection, the Guggenheim is showcasing its rich holdings of early modernism. Featuring works by such artists as Constantin Brancusi, Marc Chagall, Vasily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, Joan Miró, and Piet Mondrian, this inaugural selection illustrates many of the radical approaches to art-making that developed across Europe and Russia in the second decade of the 20th century.
