Phillip King, British Sculptor, Has Died at 87

A sculptor and one of the leading figures of the British art scene during the 1960s, Phillip King passed away on July 27 at the age of 87.

He has been considered by some critics as one of the most important British artists of the past half-century, although he is less well known than his mentor, Anthony Caro. The abstract sculptures he created were displayed in museums around the world and the US and wrere the subject of a small survey at the Tate Britain.

King was also an important art educator in addition to creating artworks. In 1999, he was appointed president of London's Royal Academy of Arts, where he served for five years.

 

A statement was written by the manager of the Philip King Gallery following king's death: "...he re-taught us that art and sculpture-making should know no rules or limitations. His curiosity, joy, and sparkle were boundless and contagious, and we will miss him dearly."
