Bahman Jalali - Solo Show
20 days to the ending
16 Oct - 6 Nov, 2026

Statement:
Dastan:Outside Projects, will open “Slideshow,” Episode 2, at Focus Room on Friday, 16 October 2026.
With each episode, “Slideshow” projects a selection of photographs by a particular photographer onto the room’s walls. “Slideshow” is a project by Alborz Kazemi.
The second episode, titled “Khorramshahr Bears Witness,” is devoted to photographs by Bahman Jalali from the days of the war in Khorramshahr.
In this episode, the images extend across two walls and two windows, drawing the viewer’s gaze from one wall to a window and then to the other wall.
Throughout the exhibition, brief remarks by Jalali about his approach to photography recur over layered music, with noise entering at intervals; it is as though his voice reaches us in the aftermath of a powerful explosion, through the ringing that lingers in the ears.
Sound and image each bring us face to face with the event—the event that Jalali’s camera recorded without sentimentality or sensationalism.
As he himself puts it: “My work is not news reporting; it is documentary photography.”
Reflecting this documentary approach, Jalali’s photographs of Khorramshahr are arranged in a linear sequence, from the beginning to the final days of the war.
The sequence begins with the first deployments and groups of combatants, gradually moving toward the devastating core of the war.
The violence of battle reaches its peak midway through the exhibition, its horror so stark and overwhelming that it seems only an invisible witness could have stood at the heart of the battle to record such scenes.
After this climax, Jalali’s gaze shifts from bodies caught in combat to the city’s lifeless body: deserted buildings whose ruin and silence speak of the violence etched into the city’s face.
In this exhibition, Bahman Jalali’s photographs bear witness to an experience, and through them the photographer says only one thing: “I saw it.” This episode was made possible with the assistance of Baygan Institute in facilitating access to the photographs, and with the collaboration of Rana Javadi.
Peyman Houshmandzadeh provided Jalali’s audio recordings for the project, while Mani Mohebali was responsible for the sound design.

In 2007, a retrospective of his work, curated by Catherine David, was held at Fundació Antoni Tàpies in Barcelona, Spain. A book on his work was published to accompany the exhibition.
