Wind-Borne

Statement:

Wind-Borne: Contemporary Art Exhibition by Iranian Toronto-Based Artists, Curated by Melika Shafahi.
The process of bringing this exhibition together is inspired by the way the Iranian community is dispersed across Toronto, from visibly Iranian neighbourhoods in the north of the city to a growing Iranian presence in the city’s downtown core.

This exhibition gathers artists working across different mediums who belong to different generations and migratory experiences. ///

Some of these artists belong to the 1.5 generation, others arrived in recent years, but what they all share is a deep connection and commitment to the cultural, social, and political scene in Iran.

The medium in which they work as well as their individual aesthetics are shaped and transformed within the transnational cultural spaces that connect them to both Iranian and diasporic spaces in Toronto.

Despite the diversity of these artworks and artistic approaches, a shared language emerges throughout the exhibition. Across these works, we can trace the effects of collective and individual trauma that continue to shape Iranian lives both inside and outside the country: war, massacre, forced migration, censorship, the policing of women’s bodies, and the ongoing struggle for freedom and self-expression.

At the same time, this exhibition is not only about trauma and displacement. It is also about resilience, collective and individual memory, and diverse forms of belonging.
