Statement:
The in focus gallery is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year and looks back on an impressive history as one of the pioneering galleries for photography in Germany.
Since its foundation in January 1990, the gallery has established itself as a unique platform that presents photography in its entire spectrum - from classic reportage, portrait, nude and architectural photography to conceptual, experimental, staged and abstract works.///
With a focus on photography from 1945 onwards, both vintage and modern prints, the in focus gallery is one of the oldest galleries in Germany dedicated exclusively to this medium.
Pioneering exhibitions and international artists
Over the past 35 years, the in focus gallery has set standards with over 170 exhibitions in its own premises as well as in renowned institutions and museums.
Highlights include groundbreaking presentations of famous photographers such as Elliott Erwitt, whose color photographs celebrated their worldwide premiere in a solo exhibition in Cologne, as well as discoveries such as Willy Ronis or Bernard of Hollywood, who became known in Germany through the gallery.
Further milestones were the first major solo exhibition in Germany of Bruce Davidson with his series “East 100th Street” as well as exhibitions with greats such as Marc Riboud, Thomas Höpker, René Groebli, Franco Fontana, Nick Brandt, Sabine Weiss, Susan Meiselas, Jeanloup Sieff and Jan Saudek.
In addition to the icons of photography, the gallery has also promoted contemporary positions and young talents.
Artists such as Thomas Kellner, Sissi Farassat, Scarlett Hooft Graafland, Anna Halm Schudel, Herbert Döring-Spengler and Gilbert Garcin have found a platform in the in focus gallery to present their work to an international audience.
