Statement:
Robilant+Voena is pleased to announce a group exhibition, A Mysterious Vision: The Uncanny and Lingering Influences of Surrealism in Contemporary Art, curated by Robert Zeller.
This exhibition celebrates the enduring influence of Surrealism in the psyche and creative processes of 16 contemporary artists, with much of the work created specially for the show.///
These contemporary pieces will be placed in conversation with works by historic artists Giorgio de Chirico, Leonor Fini, Yves Tanguy and Leonora Carrington. The show examines the many ways in which a movement formed over a century ago continues to be relevant to artists working today.
The exhibition expands upon curator Robert Zeller’s 2023 acclaimed book New Surrealism: The Uncanny in Contemporary Painting, which presented a sweeping exposition of both historical Surrealism and its legacy in the world of contemporary art, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the movement.
The ideas of New Surrealism are explored in the show, with works divided across four themes: The Psychic Landscape; The Psychic Interior; Non-Objective Fragments; and Uncanny Figuration.
The exhibition will be accompanied by an extensive catalogue, authored by Robert Zeller. After showing in New York, the exhibition will travel to Robilant+Voena’s new gallery space in Milan in Autumn 2025.
