Statement:
This exhibition is a retrospective exploration of Hossein Maher's evolving artistic engagement with plants and landscapes.
It examines the moment these elements first appeared in his work and the layered meanings they carry.
By bringing together key works from different periods of the artist's career, the exhibition highlights the shifts in Mahers visual language and the deep connections plant motifs establish within the overall structure of his art. ///
The presence of plants in Maher's work—beyond a purely realist or symbolic view—can be divided into three main phases:
1. In the beginning, plants appear subtly, often in the background or as repeating patterns on garments. This approach is clearly visible in the "South" series. Over time, these elements gradually take on a more central role in his compositions.
2. In the second phase, the "Myth" series places plants alongside human and animal figures, indicating a complex connection between these elements and mythological concepts.
3. Finally, in the "Plants" series—which is stylistically and technically close to "Myth"—plants are depicted independently, without human or animal figures, becoming the central focus with a radiant and self-sufficient presence.
In addition to paintings, a selection of preparatory drawings and archival sketches are included in the exhibition to provide insight into the artist's creative process.
These materials show how plant imagery in Maher's work gradually evolved, offering a deeper understanding of his artistic trajectory.
By revisiting Hossein Maher's "Plants" series, this exhibition not only emphasizes his focus on Iranian visual elements but also reflects his extensive studies in mythology, which he began many years ago.
