Statement:
Zaal Art Gallery presents the sixth exhibition in its Focus Room series, “Liminal," a solo show by Ali Phi, opening on September 19 and continuing through October 10, 2024. This exhibition marks his first collaboration with Dastan.
In Liminal, Ali Phi delves into the intricate relationship between light, interaction, and the unveiling of hidden dimensions through technology. His works transcend traditional perception, offering a glimpse into the unseen, intangible, and ephemeral.///
Through interactive installations, generative visuals, and digital data explorations, the exhibition illuminates the invisible— whether it's the fleeting patterns in QAL, the architectural echoes of Enfe'al, or the digital footprints exposed in Decompositions for Computers.
Each piece invites the viewer to engage with the delicate threshold between visibility and obscurity, exploring liminal spaces where the physical and digital realms intersect, and revealing beauty in what was once hidden from view.
Ali Phi (b. 1987, Tehran, Iran) is a transmedia artist based in Toronto whose work intersects art, science, and technology. His practice involves installations, autonomous machines,
and performances that explore the mechanisms of new media, technology, and data through architecture and space. Using computer programming and generative algorithms, he creates interactive media that blend geometry, pattern, light, and poetry.
Phi has performed and exhibited internationally at venues such as Ars Electronica (Austria), Mutek (Canada, Chile, Argentina, UAE), Patchlab Digital Art Festival (Poland), and Asia Now: Paris Asian Art Fair (France), among others.
is also the artistic director of TADAEX and has held workshops and lectures at institutions including York University and Virginia Commonwealth University of the Arts in Qatar.
