New Voices: Ritual
Group Show

6 Jun - 24 Aug, 2024

Statement:

Print Center New York is proud to announce New Voices: Ritual, on view in the Jordan Schnitzer Gallery and celebrating the second annual New Voices cohort: Ruben Castillo, Andrew Gonzalez, Elnaz Javani, Naomi Nakazato, Jonathan Sánchez Noa, and Kate VanVliet.///

Launched in 2022, New Voices is an open call program that provides opportunities for a curator-selected cohort of six to eight artists to present their work and develop their practices through a group exhibition, artist-led public programming, focused conversation, community-building, and individualized resources for artistic and professional development.

New Voices: Ritual is led by Olivia Shao, who recently joined The Drawing Center as the first Burger Collection & TOY Meets Art Curator. Drawing attention to everyday objects, concerted repetition, and a focus on process, this exhibition considers the fundamental but often unrecognized role that ritual plays in our everyday lives.

The show explores the ways in which—through the transformation of materials and the enactment of processes—ritual interacts with art-making, performance, and life. In an uncertain and ever-shifting cultural landscape, asks Shao, how can ritual ground us and help us make sense of the world?

The six artists in New Voices: Ritual consider their own individual histories, cultural references, and positions within the history of printmaking, to explore these ideas.

Combining traditional print media with sculpture, fiber, assemblage, and installation, the exhibition examines both the quotidian acts we carry out each day, as well as more formal gestures tied to ceremony or observance.
