Yavuz Gallery is delighted to "present within these pages", Hadieh Shafie’s first solo exhibition in Australia. within these pages comprises new works from Shafie’s iconic ‘Transition Series’ that feature a combination of rolled and stacked papers in diagonal and vertical compositions, introducing the idea of landscape perspective. Drawing inspiration from traditional miniature paintings of Iran, Shafie continues to subvert the relation between text and image in this new body of work.Shafie’s works consist of hand constructed intricate designs with low-relief paper sculpture to create compositions reminiscent of traditional Middle Eastern art. Shafie’s unique process sees her hidden hand-written and printed Farsi text within the folds of elaborate paper spirals. The contained language comprises fragments of language and poetry. Ultimately primordial emotions of love and passion are folded into pages of a ‘book’, exploring a more intense condition of love and spirituality. Both process-oriented and impossibly refined, her skillful works are often monumental in scale, overwhelming the viewer with a visual feast of colour.
