In the stacked paper series, the artist returns to the most familiar form of the book. Here everything happens on the fore-edge. “I use the alignment or the shifting of the stripes of paper as a technique to create abstraction and distortion of the text. This particular series also created the opportunity to explore the relationship of image to text and equalize the role image has played as subservient to text in the history of book arts in the middle east.”
The significance of the word eshgh is manifold. The word Eshgh is heavily used in Iranian art and poetry but it exists less in how people treated each other, especially with regards to Shafie’s final experiences in Shafie’s motherland, Iran. Writing and repeating the word in a simple form has become a personal mantra to find and express it’s meaning visually both on a personal and political level.
The Exhibition The Sublime Nature of Being will take place at ICD Brookfield Place from 23th of January to 27th of February.
