Built in 1738 for the Marquis Antoine Guinot de Monconseil, the hotel was the seat of the prefecture of Charente-Basse from 1790 to 1810 and became a museum in 1920. This remarkable specimen of eighteenth-century civil architecture contains rich collections of regional art, assembled at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by Abel Mestreau (1855-1939). Signs, earthenware, engravings, paintings, jewellery, costumes and headdresses, weapons, reconstruction of a peasant interior... Exhibited according to the museographic biases of the early twentieth century, the works bring to life the past life in Saintonge.
