Statement:

In honor of the 100th birthday of Theo Wolvecamp (1925-1992), a quiet but influential force within the Cobra movement, this exhibition presents a contemporary interpretation of his legacy.

Wolvecamp, who deliberately kept to the sidelines, chose artistic autonomy over publicity. His work, a fusion of intuition, raw expression and refined composition, was a search for hidden ideas that could only reveal themselves during the painting process.

An exponent of Cobra principles – freedom, spontaneity and improvisation – he had a lasting influence on the art world.

Curator Sam Samiee:

Samiee, the Iranian-Dutch artist and guest curator of the exhibition, draws great inspiration from Wolvecamp’s artistic and educational vision. In 2018, he received the Wolvecamp Prize, one of the highest honors in painting in the Netherlands. 

His multidisciplinary work, which combines painting, installations and theoretical research, forms the basis for the exhibition.
