“Guided by a need for self-expression and simplicity, she embraces materials that are readily available and sustainable; This approach honors her respect for nature. “
Shadi Parand (b. October 1966, Tehran) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is deeply influenced by her experience in fashion design, spanning over three decades. After gaining international recognition for her innovative approach to fashion, Shadi has shifted her focus from haute couture to visual arts. While her choice of medium continues to evolve, she now skillfully incorporates fabric and textile into her collages, a technique she calls "painting with fabric" . Shadi's work is known for its richly layered compositions, with varied textures and textiles that evoke a sense of tactile storytelling.
“Guided by a need for self-expression and simplicity, she embraces materials that are readily available and sustainable; This approach honors her respect for nature. “
Educated and trained in Switzerland, France, and the United States, Shadi's art reflects the cultural and creative richness of her life. Her studies in Fashion Design at institutions such as The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and Parsons School of Design in New York, along with her exposure to styling and encounters with notable designers and artists in France, helped cultivate her unconventional approach to fashion and art.
Shadi's work has gained international attention, beginning with her fashion projects exhibited globally, including her designer pieces showcased at Sotheby's London, the contemporary art event in 2009, and the prominent "Iranian Day" event at London's Victoria & Albert Museum in 2004. She brought her fascination with material and form to a series of exhibitions across Europe as soon as she began her journey of employing fabric as her main material in her collages. Shadi's art has been featured in collaborative projects in France, most notably at The Historic Châteaux of the Loire Valley, where she received awards and recognition. In 2022, she participated in The Contemporary Art Triennial in Paris, where her mixed-media pieces received critical acclaim.
Shadi's artworks, imbued with Iranian motifs like the tree of life and cedar tree, continue to draw international interest, helping her establish a strong presence in the art world.
As a multidisciplinary artist, Shadi sees her art as a journey of liberation and exploration. Guided by a need for self-expression and simplicity, she embraces materials that are readily available, reflecting her commitment to accessibility and sustainability. This approach also honors her respect for nature. Her work is also deeply connected to Iranian culture often incorporating fabric to craft multi-dimensional, tactile pieces that resonate with her personal and cultural heritage.
