The Homecoming of Cypresses

Statement:

Form has manifested in my work in three ways: free, geometric, pattern-based. These three have appeared singly, next to each other, fused together in different periods in my artistic career.///

A turning point in my painting was in 2009. If prior to that date I was looking for our place in nature, if I was trying to show nature within human beings, or to see how humans percolate within their natural environment, I arrived at "Birth". Form released itself from references to humans or nature.

It became a sign - self-sufficient, stand- alone, encompassing, conditioned by the visible and invisible forces that shaped it.

Nature has no laws. It is an infinite web of causal relationships that engender a new order at every turn.

Law is a way for us to come to terms with and control the form-defying, the blinding diversity and fluidity of forms in nature. We seek permanence through order. Nature is impermanent order.

The city, with its streets, pedestrian crossings, buildings, waterways, and parks brings geometric order to my life. Through repetition, geometric order gives me a sense of security at the same time that it brings tedium to the mix.

Decorative art appeals to fluid forms found in nature and in this way gives me an opportunity to break free from the tedium of geometry, to found beauty. In many ways, primitive motifs, rug patterns, tile works are meant to give form to wild, formless nature in enclosed spaces.

Modern art is an attempt for me to free my feelings from the stranglehold of patterns, even from the duality of beauty and ugliness.

Works that appear in Foundry reveal these three aspects of my relationship with my surrounding.
