Statement:
The photographic richness and diversity of Iran must be celebrated, particularly as it so often stands as a mirror against the contradictions that run deep in Iranian society; from deep tensions between traditional and modern views on contemporary culture, urban and rural traditional values, and the role of women in society. Iranian photography is characterised by its defiance, subversiveness and rebellious spirit, especially in its refusal to conform to the state’s strict dictates on who, what, where and how something can be captured and represented by the photographic lens. Modern and contemporary Iranian photographers are tackling notions of female identity and the role of women, sexuality and the human body, conflict, both violent and non-violent, and notions of home, identity and statehood. These concepts feel increasingly pertinent and powerful at a time of such societal instability, where the rights of women and an entire population’s very way of life is hanging in the balance. We here at Janet Rady Fine Art want to be champions of the works created by these talented photographers, whose talents and integrity must be celebrated at such a pertinent moment in Iran’s history.
