Reading Time : 2 Minutes

The Museum of Fine Arts Boston acquired a work by Remedios Varo, a Surrealist artist. This painting is one of the artist's rare large-scale works. In this 1957 painting entitled "Tailleur pour dames", the artist depicted a showroom where four women wearing costumes that transform into different objects, such as a dress that becomes a sailboat, and a scarf that becomes a seat, and a purple cape that flies. "Tailleur pour dames" is one of the 200 oil paintings she made during her life.

In the 1950s and 1960s, Varo made works in which artists and intellectuals have been illustrated in weird and fictitious spaces. She immigrated to Mexico city during world war II and became a refugee. In light of this, she advanced in his career. After she died in 1963, his works remained in demand. The prominent status of Varro in art history has led to her work being exhibited at biennials, including the Venice Biennale this year.

Varo's works remain in private collections and this painting is the first by Varo to join the Museum's permanent collection. It should be mentioned that a painting by the artist was previously kept in a public collection in New England. The MFA will display Varo's work as part of the 20th-century collections of The Museum of Fine Arts Boston on March 17. MFA director Matthew Teitelbaum said in a statement, "It is exciting that we will now begin to be able to tell the story of this international artistic movement through the art of a woman who worked in Latin America."
The Museum of Fine Arts Boston has been established in 1870, to increase cultural awareness including science, history, art, nature, and music.
