This is the first art fair and the only international exhibition which is exclusively focused on African contemporary art. Its title "1-54" is derived from the 54 countries in the African continent.

Christie's auction house was one of the main associates in arranging the art fair. Works presented in this event were also displayed and put on sale for some time on Artsy's website. 26 galleries attended the art fair; among them an Arabian gallery called "Hafez Gallery" was present. Artworks by more than 90 artists were displayed in "1-54", 40 of which had exhibited their works for the first time. Photography and painting are two mediums on which the art fair is mainly focused; portrait images depicting people of color from around the world on backgrounds of fabric textures or natural textures on canvas, constitute the major part of the show.
