Arghavan Khosravi's Solo Show at "Rachel Uffner Gallery" in New York

Author : Safoora Seyedi

Reading Time : 1 Minute

"In Between Places" is the title of Arghavan Khosravi's first solo show in Rachel Uffner Gallery in New York. The exhibition started on April 10 and will continue until June 5, 2022. Her works are mostly created during the Coronavirus pandemic and, similar to her previous artworks, involve a technique based on historical painting genres, like stacked perspective in Iranian miniature painting. Nonetheless, her strength is the link she creates between new spaces and her personal history; three-dimensional sculptures are placed next to miniature paintings, thus referring to an authentic and actual contradiction.

The contradiction mainly reflects the artist's personal experiences. These are paintings of the present, layered on surfaces formed to create visual depth. The layers have shaped a theatrical platform for her works that evokes the corresponding concept of a world that is not so real and is based on false appearances. The repetitive visual fractures in her creations represent the ruptures of Khosravi's personal life. Arghavan Khosravi lives in the United States and is separated from her family, that is, either her homeland or the sweet people who raised her. The broken surfaces of her work remind the viewer of a feeling of remoteness and seclusion. Although the feeling has originated from the artist's personal life, we all have experienced it during the pandemic.
