Author : Soheila Habibi

A show entitled "A Trillion Sunsets: A Century of Image Overload" will be held at the International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York from January 28 through May 2, 2022.

This show curated by David Company investigates the proliferation of images in the world. With the rise of illustrated magazines and newspapers in the 1920s, images began to proliferate. Today, The flood of images has become so overwhelming that commentators are always concerned that society will drown in them. The artists rethink the world around them using mass-media imagery and archives of all kinds. "Manage the photos. Otherwise, they will manage you." David Campany, curator, writer, and managing director of programs at the International Center of Photography states about this show.

This exhibition includes photographs, books, and films from the International Center for Photography archives of artists like Robert Capa, Walker Evans, Hannah Höch, Andy Warhol, etc. There was a seemingly endless supply of images that horrified and mesmerized artists of different movements. By examining clichés, stereotypes, and repeated images critically, the artists aimed to uncover alternative histories and counternarratives.
The only Iranian artist in this play is Sheida Soleimani, whose artworks are part of the center's collection. Soleimani's photo collages correspond to the show's main theme. She is a multimedia artist known for her work on victims of human rights abuses. The International Center of Photography (ICP) is a forerunner institution devoted to photography and visual culture. The purpose of this institution is to propagate sociopolitical images that can change the world and increase public awareness. By presenting exhibitions, educational programs, informations, and public programs, the institute promotes discourse about the power of images.
