Henri Matisse established the Matisse Museum in 1952, two years before his death, in Le Cateau-Cambresis, the city where he was born.
The museum is administered by France's Nord department, which caused the loans to be suspended, citing "the geopolitical crisis resulting from Russia's declaration of war on Ukraine" and how it affects China's relations with Russia, SCMP reported. Therefore, the department has suspended all its collaborations with Chinese art institutions until further notice.
The exhibition, entitled "Matisse by Matisse," was supposed to hold on March 26 and It was named the "largest solo exhibition by Henri Matisse in China".
In a statement to SCMP, the UCCA said that it was "actively working with partners in France in hopes of rescheduling the exhibition," adding that the "UCCA remains deeply committed to global cultural exchange."
