Destruction of a Historical Museum Home During The Russian Attack on Ukraine

Reading Time : 1 Minute

In the attack on Ukraine, the Russians destroyed the historic Museum Home in Ivankov, which housed notable works by the great Ukrainian artist Maria Prymachenko. Prymachenko (1909-1997) was a Ukrainian folk art painter. Through painting, embroidery, and tapestry she made beautiful and colorful animals and flowers that were symbols of peace. She began painting flowers at a young age while caring for geese. One day she went with geese through a field full of wildflowers, reached the shore and painted pictures of the flowers on the sand with wood. After that, she never gave up painting. She continued to draw flowers and animals in natural colors on the walls of her home and was highly admired for her talent. After a few years, she was awarded the Taras Shevchenko National Prize of Ukraine. In 1970 she was recognized as the "Great Artist of the USSR Artists' Union". Prymachenko was also honored internationally when UNESCO declared 2009 as the "Year of Maria Prymachenko" and was awarded the title of "Creative Artist of Ukraine". Pablo Picasso after visiting a Prymachenko exhibition in Paris stated: "I bow down before the artistic miracle of this brilliant Ukrainian."

A few curator statements indicate that some parts of the Ivankiev Museum may have been preserved, but the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has confirmed the destruction of the museum. In the present state, it is not known how many of the museum's works are remained.
