Born in 1985, Nazanin Noroozi's artworks come from the heart of private and family archival photographs. Being a multimedia artist, she uses photographs, videos, paintings, and even the graphic of computer games to create ideas and respond to the questions in her mind. Noroozi is preoccupied with concepts such as collective memory and historical experience. She manipulates the private photos and videos, challenging the concepts of lost memories and the desire to return to the past.
In 2009, she graduated from Soore University with a bachelor's degree in Painting. The same year, she exhibited her work in the group show, "Montakhab-Nasl-E No", held at Homa Art Gallery and won the award of the event. These artworks were photograph-paintings she had captured of her circle of friends and relatives in private and indoor environments.
In 2010, Nazanin Noroozi held her first solo show, "Medusa", at Homa Art Gallery. Created by using mixed media, the works, having a domestic atmosphere, portrayed women in indoor spaces in a variety of situations.
After completing her master's degree in Art History at Tehran University of Art, she moved to the US in 2012. This period is when her interest in archival images began. Away from her source of inspiration and her family and friends' environment, she advanced her work with the photo albums she had captured of the birthday parties of friends and relatives. In 2014, She put on her first solo show in the US at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, titled "Remember I told You I'd Buy the Flowers Myself", which was her MA thesis project.
In 2015, she participated in the NEW WORK, NEW YORK Biennale, and finished her MA in Painting and Drawing at Pratt Institute in New York. She took part in the Universal Belonging Art Fair, held at Prizm Art Fair in Miami in 2017. During the 2010s, Noroozi's works were featured in several group shows in the US. In 2019, she was an artist-in-residence at Mass MoCA Residency in Massachusetts and in 2020 at Alwan & Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts.
In her recent ongoing project, Noroozi uses 8mm family videos taken during the late 1970s and the 80s. She prints each frame of the movie and paints on them. The lengthy process of developing and touching up the printed photographs brings her close to what she has in mind. She is also very keen on the embodiments of nature and utilizes the images of Damavand and the Caspian Sea symbolically in her experimental films. Noroozi's collection of works is a collage of images, producing an incoherent narrative of the past next to each other. She is the editor at large of Kaarnamaa, a journal of art and criticism.
